Handcrafted Wooden Phone Cases from Keyway
We make every wooden phone case by hand at our workshop in Mississauga, Ontario. Each one starts with a flexible TPU shell fitted to your specific phone model, then gets a real wood veneer backer that is laser cut and assembled piece by piece. No two cases are identical, because no two pieces of wood are.
Cases are available for current iPhone and Samsung Galaxy models. We have been building them this way since 2012, for more than 115,000 customers, backed by over 6,800 reviews with a 4.8-star average.
The Species We Work With
Six woods make up most of the catalogue, chosen for colour rather than for what is cheap or convenient:
- Wenge: nearly black, with a tight open grain. The darkest wood we use and the base for most of our engraved gold and silver designs.
- Walnut: mid-brown, warm, with a soft figure. The most versatile wood in the range.
- Cherry: pinkish-brown when cut, deepening over time to a reddish tone.
- Maple: pale, close to blonde, and the lightest wood we stock. Used for contrast in almost every multi-wood inlay.
- Sapele: reddish-brown with a ribbon figure that shifts as the light moves across it.
- Padauk: vivid orange-red straight off the saw. The most striking wood we use, and the one that changes the most as it ages.
Many designs combine several of these into inlays you can feel with a fingernail, because they are separate pieces of wood fitted together rather than a printed image of one.
What "Real Wood" Means Here
Every case in this collection has an actual wood backer. There is no faux-woodgrain film, no printed plastic made to look like timber, and no wood-effect sticker anywhere in the catalogue.
Some designs in this collection are UV printed, and it is worth being clear about what that means, because it is a different thing entirely. On those cases the artwork is printed directly onto a real wood veneer surface, so the grain of the wood still reads through the ink and the backer is still wood. Kodiak, for example, is a printed bear scene on wenge. The alternative approach, printing a picture of wood onto plastic, is what we do not do.

How We Actually Make Them
This is the part that separates a real wood case from a wood-look one, and a lot of it runs on equipment we had to build ourselves because it did not exist at this scale.
We work in veneer around 1/32 of an inch thick: thin enough to keep the case slim, thick enough that it is genuinely wood rather than a facing.
The veneer is then cut on our Trotec laser cutter. For multi-wood designs, every piece has to allow for the width of the laser beam itself, so the cut paths are compensated to within 0.05 mm. Get that wrong and the pieces either will not seat or leave visible gaps at the joins. This is why inlay designs cost more than single-species ones: each one is a separate puzzle that has to close perfectly.
Assembled backers are bonded to the shell under a three-tonne press with a pressure-activated adhesive, then sanded on vacuum jigs and given a UV-cured protective clear coat. Every case gets a final clean and quality check before it ships from Mississauga.

Protection and Fit
Each case is built on a flexible TPU rubber shell that wraps the phone and absorbs impact at the corners, where drops actually land. The wood backer sits flush in a recessed pocket rather than glued on top, and a raised lip around the front keeps the screen off the table when you set the phone face down.

How Wood Wears
Wood is more stable in daily carry than leather. The UV-cured clear coat seals the veneer, so a wood case holds its appearance far more consistently than a leather case does, and it will not darken or patina in the same way.
The one exception worth knowing about is colour drift over long periods. Padauk in particular starts a vivid orange-red and mellows toward a deeper brown with sustained light exposure. That is the nature of the timber rather than a fault in the finish, and it happens slowly.

Wooden Phone Case FAQ
Is the wood real?
Yes. Every case uses genuine wood veneer in wenge, walnut, cherry, maple, sapele, or padauk, cut and assembled by hand at our workshop. There are no printed wood-grain imitations anywhere in our catalogue.
Some of these have printed artwork on them. Is that still real wood?
Yes. On our printed designs the artwork is UV printed directly onto a real wood veneer backer, so the grain still shows through the ink. That is different from printing a wood pattern onto plastic, which we do not do.
Will a wooden case protect my phone?
The wood is the surface, not the structure. Protection comes from the flexible TPU shell underneath, which absorbs impact at the corners, plus the raised screen lip and the camera surround that sits 1.07 mm proud of the lenses.
Does it work with MagSafe?
Cases for iPhone 13 and newer have MagSafe compatible magnets integrated into the shell, so chargers, wallets, and mounts attach directly to the case. Standard Qi wireless charging works through the case as well.
Will the wood scratch or wear?
The veneer is sealed under a UV-cured clear coat, so it holds up well to daily carry and does not darken the way leather does. Over long periods some species shift in tone, padauk most noticeably, which is the timber rather than the finish.
