Lake Eunice

This lake is the shape of a piece of ice. Round lakes in Minnesota are molds, left behind where a buried block of glacier finally melted out.

When the ice sheets pulled back they abandoned chunks of themselves, buried in the sand and gravel they had been carrying. Those blocks sat insulated for a long time before they went, and when they did the ground above them collapsed into the hole. Water filled the hollow. Geologists call the result a kettle lake, and most of Minnesota is dimpled with them.

The township here is named after this one, and it gives some sense of how thoroughly that worked. Lake Eunice Township covers thirty six square miles and holds around twenty seven named lakes. Roughly a sixth of it is water.

Eunice itself runs a little over three hundred acres and reaches thirty feet deep, eleven miles southwest of Detroit Lakes.
