Quebec keeps an official register of its place names. Lac Boileau was entered in 1968, and the line for the name's origin is blank.

The Commission de toponymie states plainly that neither the origin nor the meaning has been determined, and invites anyone who knows to write in. Someone was called Boileau and a lake ended up carrying it; who and why did not survive the trip. For a province that has catalogued its geography this carefully, a gap like that is unusual.

The subtitle is less mysterious. A presqu'île is an almost-island, the French word for a peninsula, and this shoreline is full of them. Land reaches into the water from every direction and stops just short of closing the gap. It is the shape that makes the lake worth carving — a small body of water in the Laurentides with far more edge than its size suggests.

How this one was made

The swirl in this pour came down to timing. Caught at the right point in the cure, the pigment moves enough to hold a pattern without dispersing — a window that opens and closes on its own schedule and doesn't wait for you. The house marker sits close enough to the shoreline that it needed damming as well, the same approach we use whenever detail work runs up against a large pour.
