The developer who started Sweetwater Lake went broke before it was finished, and the lot buyers had to complete it themselves.
Howard Prince had already built Princes Lakes to the north. He started buying land in Brown County in the early fifties, paying about $60 an acre in places, and broke ground on the Cordry dam in 1952. Lots went on sale at $12 per foot of lake frontage, on monthly payments.
His business went into receivership in mid 1958, and two more bankruptcies followed. The dams were not done.
In 1961 an Indiana court approved a conservancy district, which gave the property owners the legal standing and the means to finish the work. Sweetwater's dam is now the largest privately owned dam in the state, according to the district that runs it.

How this one was made
Maple and blue, the combination with the least room for error. The board is flooded and sanded flush, so pigment sits against every part of a pale open-grained face, and with a sixteenth to an eighth of engraving there is no sanding a stain back out. Sweetwater is a drowned creek valley, so the outline throws off dozens of thin fingers, most of them narrow enough to hold air with nowhere to vent. There is no open water on this board at all, only branches, which makes it slow the whole way down.
