The lake is named after the paintings on it. Mazinaabikinigan-zaaga'igan, painted-image lake, for the pictographs on the cliff above the water.
Mazinaw Rock stands about a hundred metres out of the lake and runs a kilometre and a half along the eastern shore. Just above the waterline at its base are more than two hundred and sixty images in red ochre, painted by Algonquin ancestors: human and animal figures, and an unusual number of abstract and geometric marks. It is the largest visible collection of pictographs in Canada and the only major rock art site in southern Ontario, and it was designated a National Historic Site in 1982.
The wall does not stop at the surface. The water at the foot of the cliff runs a hundred and forty five metres deep, so the rock face continues downward considerably further than it rises. The paintings can only be seen from a boat.

How this one was made
Cherry again, which takes pigment readily, so the board is sealed properly before the pour. Mazinaw is really two basins joined at a narrows, and that connection along with the channels at the southern end are tight enough to need filling slowly rather than in one pass. The upper basin is simple once the narrow work is behind you.
