The road along Mara Lake was built by men imprisoned beside it. Two internment camps operated here between 1915 and 1917.
They were Ukrainian and other Eastern European immigrants, registered as enemy aliens under the War Measures Act. Their possessions were confiscated and they were put to manual labour. Canada interned 8,579 people this way, about 5,000 of them Ukrainian. For the civilians among them there were no charges and no trials.
The two camps here were Two Mile, on Sicamous Creek, and Six Mile at Swansea Point, one used in winter and one in summer. Internees cut the road that now runs along the lake. A plaque marks the Two Mile site, two miles south of Sicamous.
Sicamous calls itself the Houseboat Capital of Canada. The camps went largely unmentioned for decades, including inside the families they happened to.

How this one was made
Nothing complicated in the shape. Mara runs long and clean edged down the board with the Shuswap River trailing off the bottom, so the blue went in without much argument. The white was the only thing asking for time, and with white the pour is the short part: the cleaning and sealing beforehand is where the hours go, because white shows contamination the way nothing else does.
