Every Kirtland's warbler nest found since 1903 has been within about fifty miles of one spot in this county.

That summer a University of Michigan naturalist named Norman Wood found the first known nest under the low branches of a jack pine. Locals already knew the bird. They called it the jack pine bird.

The flat ground on this print is the reason. Sandy outwash plains grow jack pine, jack pine needs fire to open its cones, and the warbler nests nowhere except young stands on that soil. The valleys cut into those plains carry the water. The Au Sable runs west to east across the top of the board, and Big Creek comes up from Luzerne to join it. There are two Big Creeks on the Au Sable system, and this is the southern one.

Luzerne began as a logging settlement in the late 1800s and is said to be named for Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The white pine went, the jack pine came back, and most of the county is national forest now.

How this one was made

Flush on this one, which scales the model so the highest ground sits level with the frame. That was the right call and not a close one. This is sandy plain country with river valleys cut into it, and the total relief across the whole board is modest. True-to-life would have produced something close to a flat sheet, and exaggeration would have turned gentle valley walls into cliffs that do not exist. Flush gives the ground just enough height for the terraces on the inside bends to read.

The interest is all in the water. The Au Sable and the creek both sit in trenches with steep sides, and the shallow shelf along the banks is a separate step down from the land before the channel proper. That means a lot of fine stepped detail following a line that never runs straight for long, printed as one long job with no forgiving section on it.
