The Elephant Hill fire started near Ashcroft on July 6, 2017, and reached Pressy Lake, about 100 kilometres away, on August 12.
It took 37 days to cover that ground. When it arrived it destroyed 33 houses at the lake and 24 outbuildings. Residents say they were told pumps and sprinklers would be installed to protect the buildings, and that photographs taken afterwards showed no such equipment in place.
The fire burned for 76 days and covered 191,865 hectares, the largest of British Columbia's record 2017 season. Investigators later concluded it most likely started from discarded smoking materials. Nobody was identified and no charges were laid.
People rebuilt. A rehabilitation project has been clearing and replanting the burnt ground around the lake, and the first test area went back into trees in 2024.

How this one was made
The compass rose was the slow part. It is a small mark with a lot of fine linework, and each of those thin channels is somewhere air can lodge with nowhere to escape, so it needed working through on its own. Blue and white in the same board meant damming between them so neither wandered. And white always means the board gets cleaned and sealed properly first, because it shows every trace of what the laser leaves behind.
