The village of Lake Placid is not on Lake Placid. Main Street, the Olympic oval and the arena all sit on Mirror Lake, a different water.

Lake Placid the lake lies north of the village, screened from the roads that run through town. Plenty of visitors never see it. It has no Olympic history at all.

What it has instead is a few islands, clear water, and one state launch at the southeast end. It is a headwater lake, running out through the Chubb River into the Ausable and on to Lake Champlain.

The village hosted the Winter Games in 1932 and again in 1980, one of only three places to have done it twice. The hockey game against the Soviet Union was played on the other lake, a short walk from this one.

How this one was made

Not wall to wall, so the lake's dam follows the waterline about half an inch out and the flood runs along the shore, which keeps the pour contained and the staining exposure narrow. Placid is a busy outline for its size: two large islands sitting inside the water, deep bays cutting in from both sides, and channels between the islands and the shore that are exactly the width air likes. The border line around the outside is its own thin channel running the full perimeter. The star is small and out on its own.
