Lake Morey freezes into what is generally reckoned the longest ice skating trail in the United States. The route runs about four and a half miles around the shore.
The resort clears it once the ice will hold, usually by mid January, and grooms it daily. The exact route changes from year to year depending on where the ice is good. Skating is free if you bring your own blades, and the hills around the lake keep most of the wind off.
The lake is named for Samuel Morey, who ran a steamboat on the Connecticut River in the 1790s and held the first American patent for an internal combustion engine. He believed Robert Fulton took his design and made it pay.
Local legend says Morey scuttled one of his boats in this lake out of disgust. Nobody has ever found it.

How this one was made
Five markers on this one, each a small star with a short line of text beside it, set out on the walnut rather than against the water. That sounds like the easy version and it is not. Engraving that fine cuts shallow and narrow, so the fill does not want to sit level, and once air is down in a channel that size it will stay there unless you go and get it. The lake is a single clean oval and took almost no time by comparison.
