There is a lighthouse on Cobbosseecontee Lake. A yacht club built it in 1908 and has looked after it ever since.
The lake runs about nine miles with a reef down the middle of it, and the islands are the high points of that reef. Ladies Delight is one of them, a rock at the north end of the worst of it.
The club hired a Boston architect who specialized in marine work and built in stone over the summer of 1908. Two oxen did the hauling. The barge could only carry one at a time, and the first one left on the island tried to swim home.
It cost $400, plus another hundred for the seawall. The island's owner deeded it to the club for 99 years on condition they keep a light burning through the summer. The lantern has been blown off twice. It still lights every night.

How this one was made
Not wall to wall, so the dam runs about half an inch outside the waterline and the flood follows the shore, which keeps the pour contained and the staining exposure narrow. Cobbosseecontee makes that a long perimeter: nine miles of lake with coves, points and a scatter of islands down the middle, plus the outlet stream running off the south end as a channel barely wider than the engraving. Every island is a separate shape inside the pour, and the small ones are where air sits. Walnut is the forgiving part, tighter grained than maple or cherry.
