Ten children's summer camps opened on Lake Fairlee between 1906 and 1921. Several of them are still running.
The lake is small, set in the hills west of the Connecticut River, and most of the camps went up on land that had been farmed. They reused what was there, working the farmhouses and barns into dining halls and activity buildings, and put the sleeping quarters in tents and cabins up the hillsides.
Vermont accumulated enough of them that the National Register keeps a thematic listing for organized summer camping in the state. Three of the camps on this lake are on it, added in 2003 and 2006 for their surviving early buildings, much of it Adirondack rustic.
Camp Billings was the first, in 1906, and it started as a YMCA camp. It marked its 120th year in 2026.

How this one was made
The lake gave us nothing to worry about. The work was in the markers: three small stars, each paired with a line of fine text, sitting out in the bare wood away from the water. Lettering that small engraves shallow and narrow, which makes it awkward to fill evenly and slow to clear, because air sits in a channel like that and will not lift on its own. That is where the time went on this one.
