Island Lake sits at the north edge of Shelton, about 105 acres of water with one small island in the middle of it.

Public access is one state boat ramp with a gravel launch, a parking lot and a toilet. That is also the only place you can fish from the bank. A path of about two miles runs around the outside.

The state stocks it with rainbow and cutthroat in April and May. Yellow perch, largemouth bass and brown bullhead are already in there. It is open year round.

How this one was made

Not wall to wall, so the dam follows the waterline about half an inch out and the flood runs along the shore. Island Lake has a busy edge for its size, a lot of small bays and points packed into a short perimeter, and one island small enough that it is more of a hole in the pour than a shape. Walnut is the forgiving wood, tighter grained than maple or cherry, so the seal has less working against it. The house marker sits on its own out in the bare wood with a dam of its own.
