The show that brought modern European art to America in 1913 was partly organised from a boarding house on Cos Cob Harbor.
Painters started coming in the 1890s. John Henry Twachtman taught summer classes on the banks of the Mianus River, and Childe Hassam, J. Alden Weir, Theodore Robinson and Ernest Lawson followed. They boarded at the Holley House, a saltbox built around 1728 on the hill above the water.
Hassam joked that they were the Cos Cob Clapboard School of Art, because they kept painting the houses rather than the scenery. In December 1911 one of them, Elmer MacRae, helped found the association that organised the Armory Show two years later.
The show is generally reckoned to have made the Cos Cob painters look conservative almost overnight. The colony faded through the 1920s. The Holley House is still there, now the Bush-Holley House and a museum.

How this one was made
Blue runs off all four sides on this one, so the perimeter was dammed before anything was poured. Cherry and blue is the combination that needs watching: the grain is open enough that pigment will creep into it, and once it has, it stays. Sealing is the whole defence, walls of the engraved channels included. The coastline itself is broad and simple, so past the prep it was a clean pour.
