Knox Lake is about 21 acres of water in Limestone County, where the Blackland Prairie gives way to the Post Oak Savannah.

That transition is the setting. Blackland soils are dark, clay heavy and crack open when they dry. The savannah east of it runs to sandier ground with post oak and blackjack oak scattered through tall grass. Both landscapes were held open by fire and grazing bison before settlement, and both were largely turned over to cotton and cattle afterward.

The nearest towns are Thornton and Kosse. The Navasota River drains this part of the county.

How this one was made

Walnut, inset, with the dam following the waterline about half an inch out.

Knox Lake has an awkward outline for its size. The main body sits north with a scatter of bays around it, then a long arm runs southwest and thins as it goes, and a second narrow arm comes off the west side and tapers to a point. There is a small island near the top, ringed completely.

The southwest arm is the work. It is thin enough for most of its length that the dam lines on either side run close together, and it keeps changing direction rather than holding a line.

Two colours, the water and the black lettering. The compass rose is left as bare engraving here and takes no fill at all, which puts it a shade closer to the wood than everything else on the board.
