We make wood phone cases. We've been making them by hand in Canada since 2012. So why are we writing a guide that includes our competitors?
Because you're going to Google them anyway. And we'd rather give you an honest comparison from someone who actually understands the craft than have you piece it together from affiliate blogs and Amazon reviews written by people who've never held any of these cases in their hands.
What Actually Makes Wood Phone Cases Different From Each Other
Before we get into specific brands, it helps to understand the handful of things that actually matter when comparing wood cases. Most buyers focus on how the case looks, and that matters, but there are a few construction details that determine how well the case will hold up, how it'll feel in your hand, and whether it'll work with your charger.
Real Wood vs. Printed Wood
This should go without saying, but not every "wood" case is actually wood. If you're buying from Amazon for under $15, there's a good chance you're getting a printed plastic case with a wood-grain pattern. Every brand in this guide uses real wood. That's the baseline.
Veneer vs. Solid Wood vs. Wood Burl
Most wood phone cases, including ours, use wood veneer. Veneer is a thin slice of real wood bonded to the case body. It keeps the case slim while giving you the look, feel, and grain of natural wood. It's not a compromise. It's the standard approach for a reason.
Some brands use solid wood, which is thicker and heavier. Others, like Carved, use wood burl (the knotted, swirling growths found on trees) combined with epoxy resin. Each approach gives you a different aesthetic and feel.
The Bumper
The bumper is the frame that wraps around the edges of your phone. Almost every wood case uses a TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) rubber bumper. It's flexible, absorbs impact, and keeps the case snug. The differences between brands come down to the quality and thickness of the TPU, whether the buttons are covered or cut out, and how much lip extends past the screen for face-down protection.
One exception is Toast, which doesn't use a bumper at all. Their product is an adhesive wood veneer that sticks directly to your phone. More of a skin than a case.
MagSafe Compatibility
If you use a MagSafe charger, wallet, or car mount, this matters. Some brands include MagSafe magnets as standard, some offer it as an add-on, and some don't support it at all. We'll call this out for each brand below.
The Brands
Keyway
Visit KeywayMississauga, Ontario, Canada · Est. 2012
This is us, so take this with a grain of salt. But we'll be as straightforward here as we are about everyone else.
Keyway has been handcrafting cases in Ontario since 2012. What sets us apart from most of the brands on this list is the range of materials and styles we offer. We're not just a wood case company. Our lineup includes real wood veneer, genuine leather, canvas, UV-printed designs, and our One & Only epoxy resin cases where every single case is unique.
If you want a natural walnut case, we've got it. If you want a leather case with a terrain map, we've got that too. If you want something with a bold graphic print or a hand-poured resin design, we do those as well. We also offer custom monogram and star map cases for personalization.
MagSafe magnets are included standard on all current models, no upcharge. Every case ships with a TPU bumper with covered buttons and raised edges for screen protection.
We back everything with a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects, a 30-day satisfaction guarantee, and our Keyway Replacement Program that gives you 50% off a replacement if you damage your case within 90 days. For returning customers, our Nomad Club offers 35% off future orders, something none of the other brands on this list offer.
Carved
Visit CarvedElkhart, Indiana, USA
Carved is probably the most well-known name in the wood phone case space, and for good reason. Their specialty is wood burl and epoxy resin. Every case is made from a unique piece of maple, buckeye, walnut, redwood, or cedar burl combined with coloured resin. No two cases are identical, and they photograph each one individually so you're choosing the exact piece you'll receive.
Their Traveler line is their standard offering, with a rubber bumper and clickable buttons. The Live Edge line is their premium tier, featuring thicker slabs of wood burl with a more dramatic, organic edge. It's a significant step up in price.
Carved also acquired KerfCase, which used to make solid wood cases with wood buttons. That operation has been folded into Carved's Elkhart workshop.
They cover iPhones, Samsung Galaxy, and Google Pixel, making them one of the few brands that supports all three ecosystems.
Alto Collective
Visit AltoVictoria, BC & Calgary, AB, Canada
Alto is the other Canadian brand on this list, run by the "Alto Brothers" out of Victoria and Calgary. They focus on laser-engraved wood cases with a large catalog of curated designs: wildlife, wilderness scenes, geometric patterns, and more. They also offer a custom engraving tool where you can upload your own image and have it laser-carved into the wood.
Their wood selection is impressive. Oak, bubinga, cherry, maple, walnut, mahogany, olive, redwood burl, and figured walnut, all FSC-certified. The construction is a standard TPU bumper with a wood back panel, similar in approach to most brands on this list.
Alto also sells on Etsy, giving them broader reach beyond their own site.
They offer a 1-year warranty with free replacement shipping if the case breaks, one of the more generous warranty policies in the space.
Toast
Visit ToastPortland, Oregon, USA · Est. 2012
Toast is fundamentally different from every other brand on this list. They don't make cases. They make adhesive wood veneer wraps. Their product is a laser-cut, origami-style wood veneer that sticks directly to your phone using 3M adhesive. It arrives as a flat-pack DIY kit that you install yourself.
The result is incredibly slim. We're talking about 1mm of added thickness. You get the look and feel of real wood with essentially zero bulk. They offer walnut, bamboo, ebony, ash, zebrawood, rosewood, and lyptus, and you can add custom laser engraving or inlay work.
The trade-off is obvious: no bumper means no drop protection. If you drop your phone face-down on concrete, a Toast wrap won't save it. This is a product for people who hate cases but love the look of wood, and who are careful with their phones.
Toast has been around since 2012 (same year as us, actually), they're made in Portland with 100% renewable energy, and they plant a tree for every product sold. They also cover a huge range of devices beyond phones, including laptops, tablets, gaming consoles, and smart speakers.
Their warranty is 30 days for defects, plus a "Butterfingers" policy that gives you a free replacement if you mess up the installation (you pay shipping). If your phone needs manufacturer repair within a year, you get 50% off a replacement wrap.
Woodcessories
Visit WoodcessoriesSchlüchtern, Germany
Woodcessories is the European player on this list. Their bumper case uses FSC-certified walnut wood (or real stone, including slate and quartzite) on the back, with a recycled silicone frame. The build quality is strong: N52 neodymium MagSafe magnets (the strongest grade), vegan fabric interior lining, and drop testing certified to 1.8 to 2 metres.
Their sustainability credentials are arguably the strongest of any brand here. FSC wood, recycled silicone, climate-neutral DHL Green shipping, and plastic-free organic cotton packaging.
The main limitation for North American buyers is availability and shipping. Woodcessories is based in Germany, primarily serves the European market, and only makes cases for iPhones. If you have a Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel, they're not an option.
WUDN
Visit WUDNMeridian, Idaho, USA
WUDN (pronounced "wooden") is a US-based brand that offers FSC-certified wood cases with optional custom laser engraving through their "Design Your Own" online tool. They were one of the first brands to publish an open competitor comparison guide back in 2022, a move that inspired this very post.
Their cases are straightforward: real wood veneer on a TPU bumper, available in several wood species. Pricing starts lower than most competitors, making them one of the more budget-friendly options for a real wood case.
WUDN offers a 30-day return window (for store credit, items must be in new condition) and a 90-day warranty covering manufacturing defects. They'll provide a prepaid shipping label for warranty returns.
Pono Woodworks
Visit PonoHonolulu, Hawaii, USA
Pono Woodworks is a one-person operation run by Brett out of Honolulu, Hawaii. His specialty is Hawaiian Koa wood, specifically the "curly" or "tiger" grain variety that creates shimmering stripe patterns in the wood. Koa only grows in Hawaii, was historically reserved for royalty, and is sustainably harvested from dead or dying trees on private Big Island ranches. He also offers California Redwood burl cases for something different.
Every case is handmade: Brett personally hand-sands, finishes, laser-etches, inks, and assembles each one. The cases use a hard plastic backer with soft TPU sides, a front lip for screen protection, and grip strips on the edges. MagSafe models are available, and there's an abalone shell inlay option on the premium MagSafe line.
Custom engraving is available for an extra $10 USD if you provide a black and white JPEG. Cases ship from a fulfillment partner in Florida for next-business-day dispatch, with free shipping and free returns. Pono has a 4.9-star rating across 3,390+ reviews.

So, Who Should Buy What?
Keyway. No other brand on this list offers wood, leather, canvas, UV prints, and epoxy resin under one roof. If you're not sure what look you want, or you like having options, start here.
Carved. Their wood burl and resin process creates genuinely unique cases. The natural material does the design work. Be prepared to pay more for it.
Alto. Upload your own image for $75 CAD or choose from their curated designs starting at $50 CAD. Canadian-made with a strong warranty.
Toast. It's not really a case, it's a wood skin. But if you hate bulk and want real wood on your phone, nothing else comes close to their 1mm profile.
Woodcessories. FSC wood, recycled silicone, certified drop protection, N52 MagSafe magnets. Just make sure you have an iPhone and don't mind European shipping.
WUDN. Real wood cases starting at $34 CAD. You won't get the polish of the more established brands, but the wood is real and the cases are functional.
Pono Woodworks. Hawaiian Koa wood, handmade by one person in Honolulu. Koa only grows in Hawaii and was historically reserved for royalty. It's a conversation starter every time someone sees your phone.
That's us or Alto. We're in Ontario, they're in BC and Alberta. Both handmade in Canada, both ship fast domestically.
We'll keep this guide updated as brands release new products and pricing changes. If you think we've gotten something wrong about any brand on this list, including our own, let us know. We'd rather be corrected than be wrong.
